Heating and cooling for Minneapolis houses, old and older

Minneapolis housing stock is a century deep, and so are its heating systems. We work on gravity-converted furnaces in Longfellow, boilers in Kingfield, mid-century forced air in Nokomis, and new construction along the river, and we know which modern equipment suits each one.

Boilers, radiators and the cooling question

A large share of Minneapolis homes built before the Second World War heat with a hot-water boiler and cast-iron radiators. We service and replace boilers, and we will tell you plainly that a well-maintained one is often worth keeping. The hard part in these homes is summer. Ductless mini-split systems are the cleanest answer: an outdoor unit, a few slim indoor heads, and no ductwork cut through plaster walls. They also provide efficient heat in the shoulder seasons so the boiler fires less.

Forced-air homes

The 1920s bungalows in Longfellow and Nokomis and the postwar houses in Armatage and Kenny mostly have forced-air furnaces, often in a system that began as a gravity furnace with huge round ducts and was converted decades ago. These systems move air poorly to the second floor and the attic conversions many families have added. We fix what can be fixed in the ductwork, size the replacement furnace correctly, and add ductless heads where the ducts simply cannot reach.

Cold-climate heat pumps in the city

Minneapolis homeowners have been early adopters of cold-climate heat pumps, both dual-fuel systems on top of existing furnaces and all-electric designs in homes going off gas. The compact lots in Southwest and Uptown make quiet equipment and careful condenser placement important, and we design for both.

Permits in Minneapolis

The City of Minneapolis requires mechanical permits for furnace, boiler, air conditioner, heat pump and ductless installations, with electrical permits for new circuits. Inspections are scheduled through the city. We handle the filing and are familiar with the requirements for venting through older masonry chimneys and for condensate disposal in homes without a floor drain nearby.

Reviews from Minneapolis customers

1920s house in Longfellow with radiators and no ductwork. Three ductless heads, done in a day, and we finally have air conditioning without window units. They also talked us out of replacing the boiler, which another company had pushed.

— Marcus T., Minneapolis · Ductless Mini-Splits

Our hardwood floors were gapping every winter and the kids had nosebleeds. A whole-house humidifier and a media filter fixed both. Dana walked me through the humidity settings over the phone when the first cold snap hit.

Furnace acting up? Don't wait for the cold snap.

A no-pressure visit from a technician who will tell you whether it's a repair, a replacement, or nothing at all. If your system is fine, we'll say so.
