How Northwind started
Erik Lindqvist spent the first ten years of his career on service trucks for two different Twin Cities contractors, and he kept running into the same problem: he was sent to sell, not to fix. Homeowners with a failed igniter were being quoted new furnaces. Customers with a slow refrigerant leak were being told their air conditioner was “about done.” He started Northwind in 2006 out of a rented garage bay in Bloomington with one van and a promise to himself that every diagnosis would be honest, even when the honest answer was a cheap one.
The first winter had a stretch of nights near thirty below, and the phone did not stop ringing. Those early no-heat calls, many from homeowners whose regular company had sent them to voicemail, built the reputation the company still runs on.
Northwind today
The shop on Lyndale Avenue now runs a fleet of service and installation trucks across Hennepin, Dakota, Scott and Ramsey counties. The work has broadened beyond gas furnaces and central air into cold-climate heat pumps, ductless systems for older homes, boiler service, and the air-quality equipment that tightly built Minnesota houses need. Dana Okafor runs the service side and Mike Halvorsen runs replacements, and a good share of each year’s work comes from customers who have been with us for a decade or more.
What has not changed
Erik still takes no-heat calls on the worst nights. Every technician still shows the customer what failed before quoting the repair. Every replacement still gets a load calculation and a permit. And we still turn down jobs when a homeowner is being pushed toward equipment they do not need.
